About the City

Bonifacio is the largest commune on the isle of Corsica, located on the southern most shores of the island just west of Cap Pertusato. Its name comes from Boniface II Marquis of Tuscany, a former defender of Corse from the 8^th-9^th century.

City Areas

 

The two parts of the city aid in contrasting the old and the new in Bonifacio. While the upper city contains historical elements in a museum-like display, the harbor bears witness to the economical development of the area.

Attractions

The warm waters around Bonifacio’s beaches provide the perfect setting for wonderfull summer activities. Due to the clearness of the water, diving is a major activity in the area and underwater expeditions include both sunken caves and marine wildlife. Also, the numerous conflicts have left landmarks on this tranquil Mediterranean town.

Transportation

 Bonifacio is connected to the corsicantransoprt network by road and by train. Its harbour provides access to Sardinia and the rest of the Mediterranean, and a small tourist train, car rental shops and bus system provide it with internal transportation.

Events

Events around the island revolve around golf and art. Many golf tournaments unite players of all levels on the green of the world’s most beautiful golf course while the museum and the Bastion of the Standard hosts painting and sculpture exhibitions all year round.

Restaurants

Although tourists will find many traditional oriented establishments, a romantic night by the seaside or a past pizza lunch are not very hard to find in Bonifacio.

History and Civilisation

Life appeared here ever since ancient times, as early as the Neolithic period; although the city only dates back from the 9^th century, around the year 830. A troubled history follows, as the city has been the aim of important conflicting powers and plagues which ravaged the land.

The Bouche of Bonifacio

Established as a joint effort between France and Italy the Bouche de Bonifacio National park was established in order to protect the flora and fauna form the Strait of Bonifacio. It aims to find a mid way in the fight between the protection of the natural environment and marine human activities such as fishing diving and aquaculture.
